Caroline started working with clay in 1982, and later trained with Kim Sacks, followed by a shorter sojourn with Digby Hoets. She has exhibited her stoneware and porcelain works since 1994. In 2006 she co-wrote the book “Pottery for Little People”, a compilation of 10 years of making objects in clay with children, which also includes a short section on how to start and run a small pottery studio.
Her work expresses a dialogue with the vessel and its associations – as container, space defined by walls or boundaries, and the unapparent yet intimate relationship between the ceramic vessel and architecture – the enclosed space we eat out of and the enclosed spaces we inhabit.
She likes to explore a multiplicity of “styles” or “languages”, in forms whose beauty stem from their simplicity and understatement, and also in decorative vessels as carriers of a personal narrative.
Caroline works in stoneware and porcelain, hand built or wheel thrown, fired to 1260C. Surface finishes are kept to the minimal, slips and glazes intending to define form rather than compete with it.
Apart from her studio ceramic production, Caroline runs a teaching studio in Johannesburg, with classes both for adults and children.
